In the last week of September a 40-member delegation from the Estonian Waterworks Association (EVEL) visited Slovenia and the Domžale-Kamnik Wastewater Treatment Plant. The guests from Estonia were warmly greeted by General Manager Marjeta Stražar, PhD, and Head of Laboratory Marjetka Levstek, PhD. Stražar and Levstek presented the history of the construction of the Domžale-Kamnik Central Wastewater Treatment Plant to them, as well as the upgrade of the plant, pointing out all the advantages for the people, region and environment.
Stražar and Levstek then went on to present other important company's activities, such as the CČN educational services, in the Republic of Slovenia, and answered detailed questions regarding various topics, such as the realisation of new investments in wastewater equipment or creating price lists for industrial liquid waste treatment.
Pille Aarma, Managing Director of the Estonian Waterworks Association (EVEL), first presented their association, which has 96 members of which 41 are wastewater operators. Slovenia was the sixth country they visited in order to find out how other states use and manage the EU funds and other investments in waterworks, and what activities they plan for the next financial period (2019-2024).
On the recommendation of the Slovenian Chamber of Public Utilities, the Estonian delegation has also visited other similar facilities in Ljubljana and Maribor, as well as the regional waste management centre (RCERO) in Celje with its waste incineration facility. Both Estonia and Slovenia have problems with disposing the surplus of sludge produced by wastewater treatment plants, which is currently being exported to other EU countries.
