Minister Simon Zajc on a Working Visit at the Domžale-Kamnik CČN

On Friday 6th September 2019, Simon Zajc, Minister of the Environement and Spatial Planning (MESP), visited the Domžale-Kamnik Central Wastewater Treatment Plant. During this working visit, General Manager Marjeta Stražar acquainted the Minister with the state-of-the-art wastewater treatment technological processes used at the plant treating the wastewater from the area of the 6 owner municipalities, the use of which contributes considerably to the protection of water sources in general and of the Kamniška Bistrica in particular. Stražar also pointed out the important role the company plays in Slovenia providing research, education, and consulting services for wastewater treatment plant operators and managers.

Minister Zajc watched a film on the 2014-2017 CČN upgrade, and then accompanied by Head of Laboratory Marjetka Levstek and Project Manager Peter Cerar got to know not only all the ecological standards complied with at the Domžale-Kamnik CČN, but also the data on the amount and value of electricity, heat energy, and biogas produced at the plant.

The CČN with the capacity of 149,000 PE is treating municipal and industrial wastewater as well as rainwater from 6 municipalities connected to the sewerage network. This includes municipal wastewater from 30,000 households, as well as septic tank sludge and small wastewater treatment plant sludge. The upgrade added a tertiary biological stage to the CČN enabling the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus compunds, and a new entry facility allowing for an increased reception of wasterwater together with the appropriate pre-treatment processes. The Domžale-Kamnik CČN was among the first plants in Europe to introduce the deammonification process to treat internal backflow wastewater containing high concentrations of nitrogen compounds. In compliance with the environmental permit, the CČN also treats wastewater from the majority of industrial sources in the area, and liquid waste.
