Deammonification

Deammonification is an intensive treatment process for wastewater containing high concentrations of nitrogen substances. The centrate from mechanical thickening, which contains over 1,000 milligrams per litre of nitrogen, flows into the deammonification basin, which operates sequentially. A mixture of granulated and selected microorganisms at a regulated pH value and defined oxygen content, oxidise ammonium nitrogen into nitrite nitrogen and then nitrite nitrogen together with the remaining ammonium nitrogen into gaseous nitrogen. The advantage of this process is that it requires a lower consumption of energy for introducing air and a lower amount of an external carbon source compared to conventional processes.
