Process modelling for operators – Flight simulator for wastewater treatment operation

Time  / Thursday, April 12th and Friday, April 13th, 2018
Location / Conference room,  JP CČN Domžale-Kamnik d.o.o., Študljanska 91, Domžale
Lecturer / prof. Henri Spanjers

Description : Wastewater treatment plant model simulations help engineers and operators make decisions that reduce capital and operating costs and ensure treatment objectives are met. This course teaches operators some fundamental wastewater treatment concepts and demonstrates how these concepts are used to apply wastewater treatment plant simulators. The focus of the workshop is on the use of process simulators to support process operation from an operator’s perspective. Participants  receive an hands-on training based on the BioWin wastewater treatment simulator.

Learning goals

After this course the participants would:

  • Understand the basic theory behind wastewater treatment process models;
  • Be able to recognize principal features of some important process model simulators;
  • Be able to build a number of basic wastewater treatment plants simulation models;
  • Run simulations and analyze treatment performance and operating costs;
  • Recognize the advantages and limitations of process model simulations.

Topics:

  • Introduction to biochemical, chemical and physical processes in wastewater treatment;
  • Principles of process model simulators – operating a virtual wastewater treatment plant;
  • Running a full simulation of an existing wastewater treatment plant;
  • Building basic wastewater treatment plants: COD removal, Nitrification, Nutrient removal, Anaerobic sludge digestion;
  • Built your own treatment plant.

Henri Spanjers graduated as an Environmental Engineer from the Wageningen University. His PhD focused on activated sludge process respirometry. He worked at the Lund Institute of Technology in Sweden, at the University of Ottawa in Canada, at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy. From 1999 to 2012 he was project director with Lettinga Associates Foundation in Wageningen. In addition, from 2006 to 2008, he was part-time professor of modeling and simulation of biosystems at Ghent University, Belgium. Since 2012 he is full-time associate professor in the section of Sanitary Engineering, Department of Water Management, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Delft University of Technology, where he is head of the Industry Water group. He is secretary of the International Water Association Specialist Group on Anaerobic Digestion and Editor-in-Chief of the Water Resources and Industry journal.

Henri Spanjers graduated as an Environmental Engineer from the Wageningen University.
